Lake Jordan is a popular weekend spot for area residents looking to camp, fish, swim, boat or just relax by the water. The 46,768 acre gem off of US 64 near Apex and Pittsboro is simply gorgeous, but it’s also provides the water supply for its surrounding cities! The calm waters are perfect for water skiers and knee-borders along with fishermen, campers and swimmers.
Residential property is not available on Lake Jordan, as it is owned by the State of North Carolina and run by the US Army Corps of Engineers. It was made available to the public for nominal fees that help maintain and improve areas of the lake.
The NC Division of Parks & Recreation operates eight areas on the lake – Crosswinds Campground, Parkers Creek, Poplar Point, Vista Point, Robeson Creek, New Hope Overlook, Ebenezer Church and Seaforth. Facilities include boat ramps, dump stations, hot showers, parking, picnic areas, telephones, restrooms & trails.
You can watch for Bald Eagles in the NC Wildlife Resources Commissions’ Wildlife Observation Deck, located five miles south of I40 on NC751.
The park is open 8 a.m.-8 p.m. April and September, 8 a.m.-9 p.m. May through August, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. November through February, and 8 a.m.-7 p.m. March and October. Entrance fees range from $5/car and $10/per bus ($3/senior citizens). Entrance fees only cover recreation activities. Separate fees are charged for picnic areas and campsites.
A disastrous hurricane struck the Cape Fear River Basin in 1945. Then Jordan Lake, which consists of 14,000 acres of water, got its theoretical start when Congress directed the Army Corps of Engineers to do a study of water resource needs in the area. In 1967, construction began, and in 1973 New Hope Lake was renamed to B. Everett Jordan Dam and Lake in honor of a former North Carolina senator.
