Lake Wheeler

Lake Wheeler, which does allow residential development in certain locations, can be found in Raleigh on Lake Wheeler Road. It serves as Raleigh’s secondary auxiliary water supply. This 800-acre park also serves a recreation for the capital city’s residents. Lake Wheeler allows controlled fishing and other activities, including picnic areas (more than two-dozen stand-alone tables located along the water) and BBQ grills, volleyball courts and restroom facilities.

Residential development is allowed on Lake Wheeler.

Visitors can launch private boats at the lake after paying a launch fee. Jetskis (also known as Personal Water Craft or PWCs) are not allowed to launch at Lake Wheeler, however.   The fees for launching a private boat on to the waters of Lake Wheeler are:

•    $4.00/Raleigh Residents
•    $6.00/Non-Raleigh Residents
•    $1.75/Senior City Rate (for patrons above age 62).

Season passes are also available, allowing unlimited use of Lake Wheeler for private boat launchings (during operating hours).  This season passes are valid from January through December for each calendar year.  These rates are:

•    $100/Raleigh Residents
•    $150/Non-Raleigh Residents

It is open 7-days a week, year round, with the exception of Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Years and MLK, JR Day.

The Waterfront Program Center is a newer facility, established in 1998 and is used for various events, including weddings & receptions, business meetings, retreats, musical events, private parties and more!
